How Much Data Does Streaming Music Use, and How to Cut It

Streaming music at a standard quality setting uses roughly 70 MB per hour. Two hours a day is about 4 GB a month — which on many prepaid plans is the entire bundle, spent on audio.

The good news is that music is one of the easiest things to make cheaper, because the quality setting has a much bigger effect on data than it has on what you hear through phone earbuds.

What an hour of listening costs

Data use is set by the bitrate, and it is simple arithmetic: bitrate in kbps, divided by 8, times 3600, gives you kilobytes per hour.

These are audio only. Album art, app telemetry and the video clips some apps autoplay in the background sit on top.

Where the data actually goes

The bitrate is the largest line item but not the only one, and the others are easier to eliminate.

  • Re-streaming the same tracks. Playing a favourite album ten times over mobile data costs ten times the data. Downloaded once, it costs one.
  • Skipping. Every skip has already buffered several seconds of the track you abandoned. Heavy skipping can add a noticeable fraction on top.
  • Autoplay video. Several music apps show video canvases and artist clips. Video costs several times what audio does. This is usually a separate setting.
  • Background refresh. Recommendation feeds and artwork prefetch while you are not listening.
  • Reconnection churn. On an unstable connection the app re-buffers repeatedly, sometimes fetching the same segment more than once.

The changes that save the most

In rough order of how much they save per unit of effort:

  1. Set streaming quality to low on mobile data, high on Wi-Fi. Almost every app has separate settings for the two. This alone can cut usage by half or more.
  2. Download your regular listening on Wi-Fi. The forty or so tracks you actually replay account for most of your listening. Downloading them once ends the recurring cost.
  3. Turn off autoplay video and canvases. Pure saving, no downside for listening.
  4. Turn off background refresh for the music app in system settings.
  5. Own the files you replay most. A file on the phone costs nothing to play, forever, and works with no signal.

Set a data warning in system settings as well. Both Android and iOS can track per-app usage per billing period, which turns a monthly surprise into a visible number.

Why low quality sounds better than you expect

The audible difference between quality tiers is much smaller than the data difference, and it shrinks further in the conditions people actually listen in.

On bundled earbuds, on a bus, over Bluetooth, the transducer and the background noise are the limiting factors — not the bitrate. Modern codecs are also far better at low bitrates than the ones that gave "low quality" its reputation: a 64 kbps Opus stream is listenable in a way a 64 kbps MP3 from 2003 was not.

The rough guide: on phone speakers and cheap earbuds, quality stops improving above about 128 kbps. On decent wired headphones in a quiet room, it keeps improving to around 256. Almost nobody is in the second situation while on mobile data.

Downloading costs data once, streaming costs it every time

This is the arithmetic that decides the whole question. A four-minute track at 192 kbps is 5.5 MB to download. Streaming it at the same quality is also 5.5 MB — the first time.

For anything you play more than twice, downloading is cheaper. For a favourite album, it is cheaper by two orders of magnitude.

Building the offline set efficiently

You do not need to download everything — just the part you replay. For most people that is a few dozen tracks and two or three albums.

When you do download, pick the bitrate for the device rather than taking the highest available. At 128 kbps a hundred tracks is 370 MB; at 320 kbps the same hundred is 920 MB, for a difference you will not hear on earbuds. You can choose the bitrate before the download starts, which is the point at which the saving is available — converting down afterwards saves storage but the data is already spent.

  • Download in one Wi-Fi session rather than a track at a time on mobile.
  • Use 96 kbps for podcasts and spoken word. Speech does not carry the detail a higher bitrate protects.
  • Keep the offline set small enough to be worth curating — a hundred tracks you chose beats a thousand you did not.

Checking your own numbers

Estimates are useful; your actual usage is better. Both platforms report it per app.

On Android: Settings → Network & internet → Data usage → App data usage, then pick the app and the billing period. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data, scroll to the app list. The iOS counter runs since you last reset it, so reset it at the start of a billing cycle for it to mean anything.

Look at the number after a normal week. If music is a large share of it, the settings above will move it more than anything else you can change.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does an hour of music use?

About 43 to 58 MB at normal quality, 72 to 86 MB at high, and 115 to 144 MB at very high. Data saver settings bring it down to roughly 11 to 29 MB per hour. Lossless streaming is in a different league at 360 MB and up.

Does downloading use less data than streaming?

For a single play they cost the same. For anything you replay, downloading is far cheaper, because the file is fetched once and every play afterwards is free.

Will lower quality noticeably hurt the sound?

On phone speakers, bundled earbuds or over Bluetooth in a noisy place, barely. On good wired headphones in a quiet room, yes. Most mobile-data listening happens in the first situation.

Does an equaliser or volume setting affect data use?

No. Both are applied on the device after the audio arrives. Only the bitrate and the amount you play change how much is transferred.

Why did my usage jump without me listening more?

Common causes are a quality setting that reset after an app update, autoplay video being switched on by default, or the app falling back to streaming because downloaded content expired and needed re-fetching.
